We live in the post lawn mower parent generation and as such we’re hyper focused on the concept of self-esteem. The need to make sure you always like yourself and think highly of yourself is quite overrated. I am of course biased since I’ve spent too many years stewing in pure self hatred but I don’t think self-esteem on its own is what builds character. The desire to self improve and acting on it in meaningful ways is what builds character and leads to fulfillment and that can be done without being stuck on your self perception.
