The idea of government not being secular is foreign to most Americans and most in the modern west. Religion for many is viewed as antiquated and dead so to center it with the state in modernity isn't not only feasible to most but would be indicative of society becoming authoritarian and backwards. I've come to realize that the ultimate authority is God and with his church being an extension of his authority on earth then the state can only derive legitimate authority from it.
