Wow, I completely missed this one and I am surprised no one answered.
Being a personal trainer for over 15 years, and training myself, free weights are the best on the body. Machines make your body go into unnatural positions, therefore, higher risk of injury.
The best training is functional training. What is functional training? Something you do everyday naturally.
For example, those big earthmover tires people flip, that’s extreme functional training.
A small example; in the kitchen, take a paper towel, wet the floor with your favorite cleaner, hold on to the counter and you can do side lunges, and backwards lunges.
Cans of soup or veges, used as free weights for bi/tris and great for walking lunges.
If my clients wanted do workouts at home and we used no equipment, it was loads of fun and definitely creative.
I apologize for missing this poll, this was my specialty.
The archive is vast so no worries. I posted this one over a year ago. I think some machines can help you train to failure more effectively but free weights allow you to get the best range of motion with the least discomfort. This is most true for dumbbells. I train mostly with free weights.
Thanks for the comment it's appreciated as always!
